Android setup and troubleshooting

Setup

Install Google Chrome app from Play Store on the device

Enable Developer Mode

  1. For Android 4.2 & 5.0

    • Go to Settings. Tap the Developer Options

    • Check the USB debugging checkbox

    • For Android 4.2

  2. For Android devices that require input Captcha (example: Xiaomi)

    • Go to Settings, and tap the Additional Settings

    • Tap Developer Options

    • Enter Captcha

    • Enable Developer Options

    • Enable USB debugging

    • Turn off Turn on MIUI optimization option

    • Turn on Install via USB option

Turn off the Screen Lock setting

  • Go to Settings, scroll and touch Lock screen and security

  • Touch None option

Turn off "Auto deny apps from auto-starting" on ASUS device

  • Open Mobile Manager app

  • Select menu Settings

  • Uncheck Auto deny apps from auto-starting option

Disable suggesstion/prediction text in keyboard

  1. SamSung devices:

    • Go to Setting

    • Tap on Language and input or Language and keyboard

    • Find Keyboards and input methods section

    • Tap on currently using keyboard or default keyboard of the device (Samsung keyboard)

    • Find Predictive text and turn it off.

  2. LG devices

    • Go to Setting

    • Tap on Language and input or Language and keyboard

    • Find Keyboards and input methods section

    • Tap on setting of currently using keyboard or default keyboard of the device (LG keyboard)

    • Find Auto-correction and turn it off.

  3. Google Nexus devices

    • Go to Setting

    • Tap on Language and input or Language and keyboard

    • Find Keyboards and input methods section

    • Tap on setting of currently using keyboard or default keyboard of the device (Gboard)

    • Tap on Text correction

    • Uncheck all suggestion and corrections options

      • Show suggestion strip

      • Show emoji suggesstions

      • Personalized suggestions

      • Auto-correction

      • Auto capitalization

Change the Settings View Type into List view Type

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Options (if available) and choose List view (if available)

Install Kobiton's certificate for Network Traffic Capturing

Note

These steps captured are performed on Android 7 - LG G5, they may be different a bit if your device is different.

  • Open Chrome browser
  • Enter URL: https://s3.amazonaws.com/kobiton-us-east/downloads/ca-certificate-rsa.cer
  • Grant Download permission for Chrome browser to download and install certificate

  • The device will ask to enter the Name the certificate, just enter Kobiton as name and press OK.

  • If the device doesn't turn on secure screen lock, it will ask to change the screen lock before adding certificate to credential storage, press Settings to setup secure screen lock.

  • Select PIN style

  • Enter 0000 and press NEXT

  • Re-enter 0000 to confirm new PIN

  • If the device asks to Select what notifications show on Lock screen, just select Hide sensitive only and press OK

  • The device will show a toast message to inform that the certificate has been added to credentials storage.

  • Validate Kobiton's certificate in Trusted credentials

  • Open Settings app and navigate to Security

  • Select Certificate Management

  • Select Trusted credentials

  • Select User. If Kobiton, Inc is displayed, congratulation! you installed the certificate into the device successfully

  • Remove secure screen lock (The Kobiton's desktop app won't use this device if it has secure screen lock enabled)

  • Open Settings app and navigate to Lock screen

  • Select Screen lock

  • Enter 0000 and press OK

  • Select None or Swipe style

  • If device asks to confirm Remove PIN, press REMOVE

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting guidelines for Android devices

Device works well when we see Register To Cloud or Unregister button

Otherwise, check below problems and corresponding fixing action

Issue - "Allow USB debugging" dialog on Android

Identify problem

  • Desktop App shows label saying "Allow USB debug ..."

  • Double check again by running adb devices from Android SDK

    • Click on gear icon in Desktop App and copy path to Android SDK folder

  • Paste to Terminal app, append path to adb tool /platform-tools/adb devices and run. Expect to see the text unauthorized

Action

  • Get UDID

  • Go to the shelf that contain this device because we must handle this directly

  • Follow below steps

    • Check on "Always allow from this computer"
    • Tap on "Ok" button

For Unknown issues (None of above problem is found) on Android devices

Please do the steps below for fixing

  1. Unplug devices
  2. Restart devices
  3. Revoke developer options
  4. Turn on developer options
  5. Plug devices again
  6. Plug / unplug a few times to see "Allow USB debugging" dialog -> Hit "OK" if exists
  7. Move to Home Screen
